I'm not happy! I'm not happy at all. When you wait for a game for many years, and that game is like a sledgehammer that runs straight across your head, you should not be happy! When your one of the most important games of the year is converted to a cold water bucket that is poured on your head, you should not be happy at all . Even if the overallity of the game is about being happy.speaking frankly .
We Happy Few was the game we were hoping to come and save us.
story
The story of the game is the story of a man named Arthur who had a brother in his childhood. As it is known, in the war with the Germans, he is compulsorily detached from his brother, but he does not remember how this happened exactly.Arthur lives in a city with interesting features on it.In this city, people have become addicted to using a pill called Joy.This pill is abundant and available at any time and place that they want, and using it cause forgetting ugly and bad things in the life and happily continue their life .But the joy is not really what is designed for the comfort of the people, and in fact it's a plot from the rulers of the city so that they can do their crimes behind the scenes. One of the joy effects is to blind people to ugliness . In fact, it creates a kind of filter that turns ugly scenes into places with beautiful and eye-catching scenes! In the same way, the eyes of the people of the city are closed to all the ugliness, and only is the joy and gladness that remains for them! The issue does not end here, and the tablet also has a lot of side effects for its users. This pill will make them forget about the past, and they can not even remember the most important events of their past life.Arthur is exactly in the same situation. He does not remember his adventures with his brother, and with remember him he decided to put aside the consumption of happiness forever. Not taking joy with the appearance that it is not mandatory, but it has terrible consequences! In this way that all the guards of the city can follow someone and forcefully put "joy" in his mouth! Arthur, since that time, must be careful that nobody can discover his strange mystery.
The biggest problem with We Happy Few story is that it's messed up. You might not know, but from the beginning, it's not even these few lines of story inside the game. The game was supposed to be a simple survival game with simple mechanics and a bioshock-like space. But after fans, with the experience of the early access edition, strongly criticized the makers, they were forced to "make" their own story and put inside the game. It turned out that We Happy Few suddenly turned into an Adventure Action! This extra story feels strongly throughout the game. Because in fact the gameplay and the systems and mechanics that the game uses are not compatible with the story. On the other hand, the story itself is not as rich as the atmosphere and the world of the game, and it goes through a very modest manner. Although it may sound like the most powerful part of the game is its story, but on the contrary, the story is never a factor in attracting you. You will never be excited about events inside the game, and never events happening to characters will not affect you. Their destiny will not matter to you, and this lack of communication will follow you until the end of the game. Even if I want to talk somewhat more dangerous, I must say that the story of the game may turn out to be a tedious, sometimes frustrating factor.
Gameplay
Passing from the story section, we need to talk about the We Happy Few gameplay. If the story of the game looks like messy, the gameplay is several times worse. The first and most important problem with We Happy Few that personally I have is to try to combine several genres. Each genre can be a separate game for themselves. Of course, we have lots of games that have created new and amazing experiences in the same way, but the point here is that those games have managed to cope with all the standards and features of the genres that they have grasped and reap the sensible experience. But at We Happy Few, the only thing that does not matter is compliance with standards. If I want to tell exactly for you, this game is a combination of role-playing, survival, action, stealth, adventure and open world elements. Of course, if it has a right planning team and manage the resources properly, they can emerge an excellent game from those elements. But the problem here is that We Happy Few wanted all these elements together and disrupted their performance! They did not have the ability to make such a game, either technically or in terms of time, but their excessive ambitions have made it so desperate. The game makers could easily put aside role-playing machanics and only create an open world adventure game with stealth elements. If they were focused on this section and did not go through ten different genres at the same time, We Happy Few was now a much better game. This usually threatens small teams and maybe the best example of it is Dontnod team. The creator of games like Remember Me and Vampyr has also done a lot of ambitious work. But the difference with Compulsion Games is that they always have a safety valve for themselves. It's true that their ideas are big and their abilities are low. But in any case, they will prevent a game from becoming a disaster. This is exactly what the We Happy Few builders have not paid any attention to.
Another part of the gameplay is related to the survival mechanics. Elements like hunger, thirst and tiredness. These things that have not seen in games of this kind at all, we see them here but its not clear why ! Games that use these elements have a special style, their designs are unique and, most importantly, they have mounted their entire gameplay on these elements! Not just use these three mechanics in their different and irrelevant gameplay. Survival mechanics in the game are completely extra and even annoying, and not even a particle in shaping gameplay systems. The role-playing part is similar. There are plenty of items to play but they are useless. You can play the game to the end and do not use 90% of the items you have in the inventory. The searching system is a failure, and all the items do not encourage you to go around in the environment. If you can not open a box, you will not really care. Because none of the items is very useful to encourage you to do hard works. While it was unbelievable the game also has a crafting system, which is officially useless.
Graphics and sound
The last section, audio and visual part, has at least less critics, although they are not very acceptable. Compared to other parts of We Happy Few, graphics and sound parts are more tolerable. Of course, if we filter all its technical problems. The good artistic graphic of the game has caused the landscapes look good and create eye-catching visuals. Unfortunately, as soon as we move away from the arts section and go to the technical section, we are sadly disappointed. Texture, materials and effects are not very satisfying in the game. The models do not look good at near distances, and all of this happens while the builders use the powerful Unreal 4 engine. The game's graphics in the tech industry can be called in the seventh generation, and whereas in the seventh generation we have better games than this. also in addition to all of these, there is occasional frame dropping, which is very annoying in parts like inside the city. In the sound section, We Happy Few has a very modest performance. Personally, I expected the music to be at least as large as possible to consider it as a good point. But music will never become a factor in enjoying the game. Sounding and speaking the game, although it can not be called weak, still does not see any particular shine inside it and never goes beyond simple standards.
Conclusion
It's usually said that do not play bad games to don't waste your time. This is quite logical, but my point is different about We Happy Few. If you have enough money and you are confident that you will not miss the masterpieces of the year and all the good independent games, play We Happy Few. Yes! Play to figure out exactly what games should not be! Play to figure out what kind of mistakes game builders should not make to build good games and what they should do and what they should not do . Fortunately, Compulsion Games will probably survive this strange defeat. Because Microsoft has bought the studio some time before the game is officially released, it is supposed to give it a general overview. Because, because of $60 catastrophic cost of the game, it's likely that if Microsoft did not get involved, the makers should now be satisfying their creditors.
